In 1999, prior to becoming MTV regulars, AFI released
Black Sails in the Sunset, which remains the darkest album of their career. The band's fourth LP, it earned AFI their goth rock association, and was the first to feature current guitarist Jade Puget, who introduced a heavier tone. Driven by frontman Davey Havok's anguished lyrics- "I'm caught in the twisting of the vine," he wails in "God Called in Sick Today"- the album showcases the band's progression by putting a somber spin on their punk roots.
