Biography

Dutch outfit the Ex have been at it since the early 1980s, influencing countless bands (including heavyweights Sonic Youth and Fugazi) in the process. The amazing thing is, they keep getting better. Characterized by primitive intensity and bold musical experimentalism, the Ex's ever-evolving style is a perfect companion to their anarchist politics -- a cause they have tirelessly championed since their inception. Their beginnings in Amsterdam's squats yielded a harsh, angular sound built around fierce rhythms and abstract guitar work. Though their sound is still rooted in these principles, the band has never ceased exploring new musical perspectives, relying heavily on the creative potential of improvisation. A testament to their skill and expressive power, the band has collaborated with an all-star cast of musicians on many occasions, from free drummer Han Bennink to various Eastern European folk preservationists to the late avant cellist Tom Cora. This is incredible music with an honest, impassioned message, matched by an absolutely unparalleled live show. In short, the Ex embody all that is powerful and vital about the Punk rock movement.
