If American Idol was American Moustache, Bucky Covington would have placed higher than eighth. But maybe one of the reasons why his debut doesn't sound too overproduced and weighed down with money is because he wasn't such a high profile winner of the 2006 series. If he was, songs like the rootsy "A Different World" would sound less like '70s country rock and more like some big hatted goon out of Nashvegas. Not that all of his songs resonate with retro tones. "Back When We Were Gods" and "I'll Walk" are laden with sappy Americana sentiment culled from Norman Rockwell narratives.
