Originally released in 2001 under his Manitoba alias, Caribou's Start Breaking My Heart is rougher around the edges than his later work; it's also often simpler and more subdued. Beats range from a glitchy purr to passages of blasted jazz, while the coming harmonic deluge is still a trickle sliding down the mountain's open face. But his ambitions are already mapped out in tunes that find grace in abused samples and strange collisions, and a palette heavy on bells, chimes, harp, guitars and the ruddiest analog synthesizers ever to bring blush to a sine-wave.
