Donald Byrd

Groove-heavy hard bop with pianist Cedar Walton, altoist Sonny Red, and drummer Billy Higgins that gives an art sheen to commercial "groove" music. The mod-era nightclub feel of the session lets up for the ballad reading of "My Ideal," which features so little of the original melody, Byrd probably could've called it something else and collected a songwriting royalty.
