Trust is the birth of the "I'll try on any old stylistic hat" Elvis Costello that everybody knows today. It's also richly melodic, sophisticated and up there with the best albums of his career. Songs like "Strict Time," "From a Whisper to a Scream," "Watch Your Step," "Pretty Words" and the bittersweet "New Lace Sleeves" have a retro vibe to them but they don't sound tied to any one genre or style -- they sound like pure Elvis Costello. The cover photo became iconic but this remains one of the most underrated albums in his catalogue.
