A singer/rapper/guitarist coming straight out of Chico, Scapegoat Wax (aka Marty James) is one of the rare breed who can combine pop-rock with hip-hop and actually make it sound fresh. His first release, 1999's Luxurious came out on Goodvibe; he was soon signed to the Beastie's label Grand Royal. Okeeblow hit the scene in early 2001, showcasing his signature blend of tight SP-1200 beats, slightly jangly guitar work, retro keyboards, and diverse vocal styles. Whether delivering heartfelt singing or battle-ready rhymes, Scapegoat's mic presence is impressive throughout. His lyrics address topics like grocery store romance, homeless stoop dwellers, and Chico pride.
