The Pharcyde

Labcabincalifornia was initially greeted with a shrug by fans and critics, who expected another album of the goofy rhymes and gimmicky beats in line with their widely acclaimed 1992 debut. Labcabincalifornia bores into a green-tinted, lackadaisical Cali-style soul with a twist of jazz. It's a more subtle and nuanced approach, and is not as immediately accessible, but the album has aged very well. Labcabincalifornia also marked J. Dilla's introduction to the hip-hop world. The late producer is responsible for single "Runnin'" as well as the hauntingly beautiful "Splattitorium."
